Hong Kong, 27 July, 1866.
Governor
I think it quite indefensible to forward a despatch to the Right Honorable Edward Cardwell.
Registrar of Companies
Replying to despatch No. 86 regarding duties of Registrar of Companies. He understands that the duty of the Registrar is not attached to my department, with a slight exception of 5th office employed.
It appeared that in the year 1865, 10 companies were registered, and that the amount of nominal capital was much in excess of what was required.
The public were cautioned against investing in companies with slight inclination of making profit, and that in many cases, the documents registered were not in order.
I have the honor to enclose a Return of all Joint Stock Companies Registered under the Companies Ordinance of 1865, showing the number of Companies, their titles, date of Registration, amount of Nominal Capital, number of Shares and the amount of each share, and the documents registered.
With reference to Inspections, by Section 160, paragraph 4, every person may inspect the Documents.
